Thermostat Smarts: 5 Little Settings That Make a Big Difference This Fall
October on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is the in-between season. Mornings in the 60s, afternoons back in the 80s, the AC running one day and the heat kicking on the next. Around here, your thermostat earns its keep this time of year — it's the brain of your whole system, and a few small settings make a real difference in comfort. Here's what we'd tell our own neighbors in Ocean Springs, Gautier, Biloxi, Pascagoula, Moss Point, and Vancleave.
1. Keep the fan on "Auto," not "On"
Most thermostats give you two fan choices, and this one matters more than people think. "On" keeps the blower running around the clock — even when the system isn't actively cooling or heating. In our humidity, that can actually work against you: after a cooling cycle ends, moisture sitting on the indoor coil can get blown right back into the air.
"Auto" lets the fan run only when the system is cooling or heating. It uses less energy, and your house feels less clammy. Unless there's a specific reason to circulate air constantly, Auto is the better pick.
2. Cranking it lower won't cool you down faster
This is one of the most common habits we see on service calls. The house feels warm, so somebody drops the thermostat to 60 hoping the AC works harder. It doesn't — your system cools at one speed no matter what number you pick. All that happens is it overshoots, the house ends up freezing, and the unit runs way longer than it needed to.
Same thing in winter with the heat. Set the temperature you actually want and let the system do its job. Your comfort (and your power bill) will be better for it.
3. Let a programmable thermostat do the remembering
If you're still running an old manual slider, this fall is a great time to consider a programmable or smart thermostat. Mornings are cool, afternoons are warm — that's a lot of manual adjusting if you're doing it by hand. A programmable thermostat can nudge things a few degrees while you're at work or asleep and bring it back to your comfort zone before you get home.
One caution: don't set wild swings between away and home temperatures. Big jumps make the system work overtime to catch up, and in a home with older ductwork or insulation, that can erase the savings. A few degrees in each direction is the sweet spot.
4. Where your thermostat lives matters
Your thermostat can only respond to the air around it — and if that spot isn't representative of the house, the whole system gets fooled. A thermostat in direct afternoon sun reads warmer than the house really is and keeps the AC running too long. One next to a hot lamp, a TV, or in a drafty hallway has the opposite problem.
We see this on service calls more than you'd expect: the thermostat says it's 78, the living room is 72, and the homeowner can't figure out why the system won't shut off. If yours sits in a bad spot, relocating it during your next service visit can make the whole system behave better.
5. Change the batteries — and test the heat before you need it
This one's free and saves a lot of headaches. Weak thermostat batteries are behind a surprising number of fall no-cool and no-heat calls. If your screen looks dim or the display has been acting strange, fresh batteries are the first thing to try.
And while you're thinking about it: flip the system to heat for a few minutes on a mild evening and make sure warm air comes out. Finding out your heat doesn't work on the first genuinely cold night is no fun — discovering it now, when a fix is easy to schedule, is a whole lot better.
Small box, big job
The thermostat doesn't get much credit, but it's running the show. Sensible settings, a well-placed thermostat, and a quick fall check of batteries and heat mode go a long way toward keeping your home comfortable through our Gulf Coast shoulder season.
If your system seems to run forever, can't hold the temperature you set, or the thermostat itself is acting strange, it might be time for a professional look.
